Bob,
    The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that you refer to as a radio controlled 
rheostat is used exclusively in radio controlled cars, boats and airplanes.  
The day of battery powered trains may not be too far off with the smaller, 
lighter Lithium Ion and Lithium Polymer batteries.  I recently attended an 
electric jet RC event.  Some of the models that were previously powered by 2 
cycle glow engines are now being powered by electric motors that receive their 
power from batteries capable of 5000 mAh or more at speeds over 200 mph.  
Sooner or later, the battery small enough to install in our model trains will 
allow for the full spectrum of control for hours before needing recharging.  
It's just a matter of time!  Will you be ready for the transition??  :-)
