That's not the way it worked.  See the asterisked note at the bottom of the 
image.  You had DC in the track, one DC-motored loco and one universal-motored 
loco with sequence reverse.  You could reverse either loco without affecting 
the 
other's direction.  However, both responded to the same speed controller.  
Kinda 
hokey.

FYI, all Gilbert AF locos had AC/DC universal motors with sequence reverse 
before the introduction of the DC option for the 0-8-0 and DC-only for the UP 
4-8-4.
