I use Pine Sol to strip plastic models. Works great, let it soak with an 
occassional scrub with an old toothbrush. If you use the lemon scented 
variety, it puts a nice smell in the basement. The better half has noted it 
approvingly in the past.

I've seen what oven cleaner can do to an automobile paint job when vandals 
spray it on one. I wondered if it might work on plastic models.
