All --

I had the good fortune to attend the 2010 NASG Convention in Duluth, at which
Tony Koester (of RMC) was the featured banquet speaker. One of his main points
is that we (model railroaders in general) should stop dwelling on youth as a
primary potential source of new hobbyists. Instead, we should concentrate on
empty-nesters, who are much more likely to have discretionary income as well as
hobby time. Kids have no money!

My personal belief is that there is a large subset of older people who are
already model railroaders for whom switching to S would be to their benefit.
These include HO and N people whose eyesights are not what they used to be, and
O and G people who have to downsize their living quarters.

If the NASG (or any organizational entity!) is to succeed in proselytizing
non-model railroaders and other-scale model railroaders, there needs to be some
effort to appeal to these demographics. Continued youth-oriented efforts,
continued ads depicting lobster-claw couplers, continued citation of
"AF-compatible" are all doomed to fail.
