I think you are right on that point , the only downside is experienced O,
HO, and N modelers are used to being to buy whatever they want from the huge
stash of sold inventory on ebay and at train shows. The limited selection and
higher cost due to the limited supply make S a lot less attractive than it
would be if it was just competing on size and handling characteristics alone,
and I don't think there is really anything we can do about that in our
remaining years.
The solution is to educate the prospective S converts about shortline
modeling, switching layouts, marine terminals, and other schemes that swap out
numerous models and large spaces for more compact realistic scenes and
scenarios. Bob's Shabbona Railroad is great example of doing a lot more with
less commercial product, I'd love to see more railroads like it and hopefully I
