As Dave pointed out, Brooks Stover has a very nice construction article in the
December NMRA magazine. More interesting (to me) than the construction itself
is the great way to add some interesting operation flexibility to his great
layout. Brooks continues to show S as a great modeling and operations scale.
Also in the NMRA magazine is an ad selling out the NMRA heritage cars at 10.00
each. Heck of a deal for PRS and AM kits.
Here in Minnesota, our wonderful and mild fall came to a screeching end with
wind, freezing rain, icy, sloshy snow and now cold. The warm hearts of the
PPSSW guys participated in the Greatest Hobby in the Universe (or whatever it
is called) show in St. Paul last weekend. We had a 20 foot booth that featured
Tom Lennon's switching layout and I had my 5 X 9 "kid friendly" layout in the
display area. Ron Kemp points out we added some names to the PPSSW mailing
list and I am sure I had a thousand kids try their hand at controlling the
train on the small layoutI brought. My layout has been on display at the
Minnesota Transportation Museum for four or five years and with a bit of track
cleaning only ran both days of the show flawlessly. Personally, I am not much
for public shows like this, the vast majority of the kids and parents are great
but there are always a couple kids need to have their parents slapped silly. I
didn't take much time to visit the vendors but I had a nice talk with the
Scenic Express folks and left with a nice armload of new scenic projects for my
layout.
I also spent time at the Minneapolis Northfield and Southern Historical Society
meeting. My Smoky Mountain H10-44 kit was very popular with the group, I was
able to look at a number of photos of the prototype over its lifetime so now I
am ready to really get to work on the kit. I have a second kit that I am
considering building as a SOO Line unit.
Have a great Thanksgiving for all the folks here in the US and enjoy a
wonderful November week for everyone else in the free world. Most of us have
so much to be thankful for, I know I do, that is a good note to close on.
