Dear Ken,
When we were working on the F units, Dick Maddox the CEO of Lionel
came over to our booth during a slow time at one of the hobby shows we
were displaying. He talked to me for over an hour about all kinds of
neat model railroad stuff. One thing I knew, it that Dick was into HO
modeling when he was young. We were talking about sound and I
mentioned we had put our speakers in the F units roof and were
considering pointing them up with the sound going out of the fans. He
told me of the research that Neil Young had done on model trains and
speakers. They found that you can increase the sound (and the low
sounds) by pointing the speaker down towards the roadbed. Instead of
the sound traveling off of the ceiling, you will get more if you point
it down and bounce the sound off of the roadbed. Although we could
not retool and put the speaker in the fuel tank, we moved the speaker
to the rear and pointed down. We later found with the switchers, if
we point the speaker down towards the gear tower, we still got this
effect. When we install sound in our classic pre-speaker SW9s, we use
the Tony's Train Exchange hi-base 1.1" speaker with baffle (the
baffle costs more than the speaker). They are louder than our F units
or steam engines. If you can fit it, I would recommend the same. We
use velcro to secure so they can easily be serviced.
Best,
Don
