> 2011.

I remember Barney from the “S Gauge Herald”. He wrote an article about
scratch-building loco drivers that was later printed in Model Railroader
magazine.

When I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, I got to know him personally. He
was a very skilled and meticulous modeler. He had a small roster of steam
engines, one of which was a Nord Mikado. They all had gotten new motors and ran
smooth and quiet. Unlike me, he had no shelves or closets full of models in
boxes; everything was on the layout. He was proud of his track and rightly so,
because I can’t remember a derailment that wasn’t the engineer’s fault

He modeled the Sierra Railway. About 35 years ago he built perhaps 20 Sierra
2-8-0 models and sold them to S scalers.

I guess some might have called him stubborn, perhaps because of his Marine
background. For example, when the NASG came up in discussion, he would always
insist he was a lifetime member of the original NASG. He had no use for the
new-fangled group of the same name that charged money for annual memberships.
Despite this he did spend one day at the 1985 Sacramento convention.

He had an accident in the early 1990s that left him in a wheelchair. He
refigured his railroad to make it wheelchair accessible and enjoyed it for a
few more years. Eventually he dispersed his rolling stock among family and
friends and found a new home for his railroad. Lee Johnson videotaped the last
day of operation on Barney’s original layout; I have misplaced my copy and need
to get a replacement.

Farewell, Barney, old friend!
