In the 1970s Barney was one of the few (if not the only) S scale
modelers who modeled his track work in fine scale. When he built his
layout, he laid out the curves using degrees rather than radius. His S
scale Sierra Railway was an enjoyable railroad to operate. He was a
very meticulous craftsman, and produced some fine operating models. I
first meet Barney in the early to mid 1970s, and found we both shared a
strong interest in the prototype Sierra Railroad and its steam
locomotives. Around this time period, Barney was Director of the NMRA
Engineering Dept., and was involved with the track and wheel standards.
Video taping the last operating session was enjoyable, but tearing
down the layout was a sad day. Even though the layout was rebuilt in
order that Barney could have access from his wheelchair, it was just a
shadow of his previous layout. Being in a wheelchair did not deter him
from producing some nice models.
