Chris,
I've been producing brick in various scales for several years now and
prefer wood. I use Dupli-Color automotive primers (red filler primer FP102 is
my personal favorite both for brick and wood freight cars). I apply one or
two coats using 3M scuff pads (red) to smooth it out. Filling of the
mortar lines has not been a problem. This red color is also my base brick
color and in many cases the finish color as once rubbed out, I like the look.
I do adjust the motor lines depending on the scale.

Actual scale bricks would be great IMHO but can you cut them from some
other material than wood? It would be tough to seal and sand wood to remove
the grain before painting (don't want wood grained bricks after all.) I
would think, similar to scribed siding, all that fine dust
would collect in the "mortar" lines and be a pain to get out.
