As is sometimes usual for me, a different point of view. Mainstream these
days seems to be either Tortise or Switchmaster.
For simplicity and reliability it is hard to beat the pneumatic controls
(air motors), maybe that's why they are very popular on garden railroads.
You will need a microswitch to route frog power or use one of the reversers
such as the Hex Juicer. I used Del-Aire on my old layout, but are not using
them this time around, mostly because I need to control too many turnouts
from more than one location and solenoid valves are too pricey.
I'm really just getting started powering switches, but I'm using mostly
servo motors controlled with DCC accessory decoders. Eventually, they will
probably be some local panels also, so I'm making sure any decoders I use
can handle pushbutton inputs. I also have two dozen Tortises in the
basement, so I'll probably use them for some point switches. I'm planning
to use servos on all the stub switches and I'll have more stubs switches
than point switches.
