An old saved E mail. Saved as I was called down about a term I used on another Yahoo group.
Having been a Medic with the Marines in the Pacific (At Tarawa & Saipan) I just used a long time term we all developed due to war experiences. Whether these are right or wrong is always debatable. Some just come along due to habits or actions of varying groups in history. Some linger on, others disappear. My Irish mother always referred to Lace Curtain Irish, or Shanty Irish.as very different groups. (She was born in 1888) Habits and life standards were distinctly different THEN. but not now. New groups blending in to an established society have many different life styles. Having close friends who survived horrifying experiences in the Holocaust the general thoughts I have had cause me not allow German products in my house. It is my calm way of expressing my feelings. Shouting it or talking it does not help anyone. What does bother me is the tendency of Academia trying to purify reality and history. WW II never happened. SO "get rid of all modeling except S scale.????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Non-S content I have been called to task off-line for not taking issue with the use of the term "Chinese Auction". There seems to some debate on-line about the term and whether it is derogatory. Since many companies openly advertise both Chinese Auctions and supplies for the same, I think the issue is open. To be technical, the "Chinese Auction" appears to be part raffle in which people "bid" by buying tickets and placing them in front of the object they wish to bid on. More money (in tickets) increases the chance of winning the object but the purchaser of a single ticket can still win no matter how many other tickets are bid. What Ed describes is called a "Dutch Auction", were the price goes down until someone feels it is low enough and buys the object. This could be considered somewhat derogatory toward people of the Netherlands, much as "Dutch Treat" when everyone pays for himself. Both might seem to buy into the stereotype that the Dutch are, er, "frugal". In fact, it turns out that "Dutch Auction" comes from the manner in which the Dutch really did auction expensive tulip bulbs in the 17th century, so it is not derogatory. The final point of this blather is to be careful of ethnic references in your posts unless you know the derivation. Back to your regularly scheduled S content. The price goes down every few days until someone "bites". Then everyone else loses out with no sense of how the bidding is proceeding. Is this our first ever Chinese Auction? History is being made as we speak. Too bad it does not have lightning stripes. Curved stripes are pretty to look at, but zig-zag lines are stronger.
