By the mid-20th-century there was still another category: the "country-club
Irish" (represented by a certain politically-active family of that ethnicity),
although a more direct term I've heard was the "two-toilet Irish." A
fascinating socio-cultural study a few years ago was titled
provocatively "How the Irish Became White." (not really a slur at all, but
about how that particular immigrant group entered the mainstream
over several generations).

And even among the earlier settlers there are gradations: in New England, there
is such a thing as a "Swamp Yankee." I am relieved that
none of my ancestors on that side quite fell into that category (nor convicted
felons nor horsethieves), although the wealthy and prominent
also seem to have stayed away.
