Have you tried Z gauge? I did. I saved a piece of track to keep me in line.

I am downsizing again. Not trying to get rich. Anything you are particularly
looking for?

Subject: RE: {S-Scale List} How the scales stack up?

Now if one wants a sense of disproportion, consider how HO looks to someone
accustomed to O scale; I've now been in O scale longer than I was in HO (which
was quite a long time itself) and I sometimes wonder how I was able to solder
so many intricate
parts together on something that seems miniscule (including assembling a
Kemtron Wabash mogul in HO, sold to a friend later--I still have an O scale kit
to build in my old age). And I don't think it's only vision at issue, as there
is quite a bit of intricate work involved in good detailing (not only in O
scale but in the 44-tonner I am currently completing).

As for price, much of the increase in HO seems to be the electronic gadgetry,
although some may be just that new die work and
technology better represents current market prices than much that depended on
long-amortized production fixtures. And I must
say that S scale prices tend to be about the same as O scale for locomotives
and rolling stock, probably because of the smaller market and fewer sources of
supply. The design costs about the same, and the lesser amount of actual
material used in manufacture is trivial, but that design and manufacturing cost
is spread over many fewer units; in fact, S scalers are doing quite
well in that regard--prices COULD be even higher.

And to correct any misapprehension from recent posts, I have far too much O
scale to ever contemplate getting out of it; S scale is an interesting
excursion into something different, and I have every intention of limiting my
exposure.

HO stuff very well anymore. Plus the HO seems very fragile as well. Also, it's
getting as expensive as the S scale stuff.

  > Hi Don, I wouldn't worry , S always looks best in a side by side comparison
with other scales. There's just something special about it's proportions
combined with normal layout viewing distances that make it look right.

  > I think what hurts S the most is the lack of product in the typical hobby
shop. A newcomer or a parent wanting to buy a train set for their kid never
gets the chance to see or choose S scale so they only buy what is
there....typically something like LGB type large scale, Lionel or MTH O scale,
Bachman On30, HO ,or N scales.

scalers at S at train shows and in the mainstream hobby press will someday help
the scale reach a tipping point where all shops will consider it a necessity to
stock S to compete and make it a staple of their inventory? Regards, Dave
