Pete,
Lots of good discussion here. Given the prototype variables and the visual
illusion and that there are limited rail heights it partly comes down to what
you are interested in modeling, how much effort and/or money you want to put
into track and what products appeal to you. And circumstance.

My first train was American Flyer that came with Bob Peare (sp?) code 172 flex
track. That set me far ahead in the realism department from AF track. It was
tough and endlessly reusable. When it came to making the jump to scale track I
was very sceptical of the two available code 100 systems because they seemed so
flimsy compared to what I was used to and 'expensive'. It was before SHS and
AM was too big for what I wanted. I couldn't make a decision. I stumbled
across a heap of code 125 at a significant discount at a flea market and
because I had always been somewhat interested in hand-laid track my fate was
sealed. My mains and passings are 125 and yard and industry are 100. All
hand-laid.

If there is next layout it will be flex track SHS and some flavor of flex code
100.

As long as the track is properly gauged and the turnouts properly engineered
and built, scale wheels will work on any currently available solid rail system.
Flyer and the old code 172 are not properly gauged for scale and Gargraves is
hollow rounded top and scale wheels won't work.
