I've been in S Scale (mainly Sn42) for nigh on 40 years now, and took an
interest in S Standard gauge some 20 years ago. From afar, I've managed to get
some S scale up and running, and have avidly followed the S scene in the model
press.
The current topic of promotion and scale v AF etc. raises interesting points.
Am I correct in observing that the S scale press spend too much time 'preaching
to the converted' about S scale.... we already know it's tops, that's why we
are reading S scale literature. What I'd like to see is an emphasis on what's
out there and what folks have achieved, not 'generic' model railroad things
like basic benchwork, wiring, and scenery.
Next, the scale v hirail debate. Here's how I see it, mention S, and people
think AF etc etc. That is a situation I think will never change. So how do we
get S (Scale) noticed (apart from exposure in the mainstream model press)? I
think it comes down to creating an identity, one that does not leave an
ambiguity.
My question, is it time to rebrand/rename S (Scale, as opposed to Hirail)?
