I have only seen Ed's layout in magazines, videos, and pics on the
list, but I can sure vouch for his excellent blending of scales, to gain
the overall effect of distance, commonly known as forced perspective.
This makes layouts seem deeper than they actually are, and who doesn't
want to make their layouts look bigger without taking up too much real
estate?
Another bonus of using HO buildings in the background is their
price and wide range of choices.
HO signals are often closer to S or sometimes right on. Years ago
I bought some PRR position light signals in brass, sold as HO scale, but
the diameter of the targets are perfect 4' diameter in S. The masts are
a bit shorter, but then again, I've seen both tall and short masts on
these very signals.
Although mostly used by Lionel guys, some Plasticville, besides the
signal tower, also has potential. Changing the doors is usually the
biggest improvement. The diner with a flat roof and the Plasticville
name shaved off and scale venetian blinds is a good size.
