At the 2011 Great Lakes Model Railroad Symposium in Elkhart, IN this April
15th and 16th<http://glrmrrs.ning.com/>, we are having a DCC Hands-on Workshop.
I will take my SHS NYC 2-8-0 to show off a tuned engine. I will also take
along an AM NYC RS-3 to the clinic. This engine does not have a decoder. What
decoders have people successfully used in these engines?

Caveats:
1. This is not an engine I plan on running regularly, and will likely sell some
day. Also, this clinic is NOT geared towards sound, although I don't mind
putting a sound decoder into it (so this could be a non-sound decoder or sound
decoder or both).
2. My main reason for taking this, is to show off S (along with the 2-8-0) and
to tweak my HO friends and show how it is easier to work in a larger scale.
3. I'm aware this will not be a plug-n-play installation. In fact I was
encouraged to bring it for that reason.
4. Not that it should matter, but the system used at the clinic will be NCE.
5. The decoder needs to be in stock somewhere - I have a month to order and
receive it.

>From the archives, message 48293 has "I like to use the LokSound decoder for
>sound and DCC. Coupled with the bass reflex speaker you cannot go wrong.
>Actually no matter what sound unit you go with the bass reflex speaker will
>sound better than the factory speaker."

Message 42925 mentioned LokSound at
<http://www.tonystrains.com/products/esu_standard.htm>.

Message 22442 had in part "Dave Jasper brought an RS3 over to install DCC
Sound. Dave used a Soundtraxx sound unit and a Digitrax
decoder. This was a bit of an extra hassle but I think many folks have found
the Soundtrax decoders are great prototypical sound but they cause too much
motor noise.

I see <http://www.tonystrains.com/products/soundtraxx_tsunami.htm> lists
Tsunami DSD Diesel for RS-3s.

Thanks.
