Walt,
I'm not certain which Bob your addressing. If your asking Mr.
Nicholson, I'll cut my consulting fee in half!
The quoted price is probably right in line with medium quality work. My
daughter works at a Fedex Kinkos so she gets a bit of a discount for a
couple of small projects I've done. However I did the same stictching
of two images to make a "rolling countryside" scene for our modules
about 16' long. And yes the price was a bit scary, so I haven't gone
any further. However I decided on using a plastic surface to print on.
You might find it better than any sort of paper because of the
durability factor. You won't have to worry about moisture on the
basement walls effecting anything not to mention all the sprays and
scenery glues that we us in close quarters. If you catch them quickly,
a damp cloth will really clean well while a paper background will show
everything.
I honestly don't know if there are any deep discounters on the net, but
it might be worth a try, if your willing to accept what they give you.
If you decide to go with such a company or any local one for that
matter, include a gray scale on the edge of the image. In that way, if
they print that spot gray, they've done their job correctly.
