Earl,
Everyone in these parts has huge problems with AM turnouts loosing
electrical conductivity in the points. Spotty electrics will not lead
to a good DCC experience. You might consider installing those Lenz
backup power units to smooth over any spots where the loc looses power
that way you could keep all those AM turnouts in place and minimize
disruption to your layout.
