Earl,
The sub road bed on my layout is splin. It is made from wood cut into strips of
1"x 1/4". The strips are laided on the risers acording to the track plan. I use
three splines with blocks to space the spline apart for the proper width. The
blocks are made from spline cut to 2" lenghts. Then glued together.
The reason for using splin:
1. No cookie cuter plywood waste.
2. All easments are natural due to the wood wanting to stay straight.
3. Rigidity of the splin keeps all things in alignment. Once glued.
4. You can accually see the track arangment after the first piece of spline is
installed. You can change at that time if somthing does not fit.
5. Once started the spline is very fast.
6. Once done the road bed is very lite.
I could go on and on about why I like spline but this should give you an idea.
The reasons for not using spline. The original work to cut the spline from 1x4
boards. Once the table saw is set with the fence. Ripping the spline is quick.
All yards are built with plywood.
I cut my homosote in strips. For curves I cut kurfs.
