Mike, thanks for sharing your techniques.  But can you tell me what  you 
mean by "spline"?
 
My subroadbed will be plywood though it would be nice, especially for sound 
 deadening, to have homosote.  But I will only use the homosote for the  
roadbed itself.

Earl,
I agree to paint every exposed surface of homosote. I use  spline with 
blocks to space the spline apart so on the bottom of the homosote  I coat with 
Elmers glue. I then block sand the sub road bed flat.I paint the  spline and 
homosote with cheap earth color latex paint. The one thing I do  notice is 
the paint makes hand laying just a little harder to penetrate with  very fine 
wire spikes.
