Bill,  You need to check a back issue of the S Gaugian where Don H. 
published a letter from Jack Troxell to Tom Coughlin.  Tom owned one 
that also ran poorly.  Jack reworked three of those beasts into working 
engines.  It's not for the faint!  The two things you mention were among 
the thirty or so items that need attention.

I owned one of the ones he reworked but it was simply too big for my 
layout, so we parted company.  I now own a Challenger which is a 
slightly better match in size. If I could cure some shorting, it's also 
a better runner.

Considering that those engines sold for about 1K they probably were 
great investments for display models.  For another 1K they can be great 
running engines.
