I've been watching this while on the road While this response is probably off,
in the strictest sense of the word, S-Scale topic, I believe it will cill a
hole for the modelling community.
As I have finally gotten back home and out of the maelstrom, I offer the
following resources for your consideration:

Probably the best panel LED supplier I've seen is Plus Opto at:
http://www.plusopto.co.uk/ledlamps/panelmount.html in the UK....great variety,
but commercial quantities only...

Then there's those already mentioned, Mouser, DigiKey, Jameco and Allied. I
haven't seen Light Pipes mentioned yet for lighting applications. Not a brand,
but a solution, Digi-Key has several options listed. They are made of acrylic
that is cast into useful rod-like shapes, but are somewhat limited to typical
circuitboard to panel applications...
However, you can make your own out of small diameter acrylic rod, by heat
shaping, cutting, polishing and forming the ends (one to match the LED you want
to use and the other to match the hole, either smaller or larger that you want
to light). A great supplier for acrylic rod is ePlastics at
http://www.eplastics.com/Plastic/Plexiglass-Extruded-Acrylic-Rod .

Don't forget a great ebay source for warm white LEDs at
http://cgi.ebay.com/100-5mm-LED-Warm-White-FLAT-TOP-Wide-Angle-13000-mcd-/260365383869

and I would advise avoiding Amazon and resort to Radio shack in only the most
dire circumstances. Without putting too fine a point on it, I can get almost
anyhting sold at RS for 20-40% less somewhere else and save my gas for things I
need it for. Here are some more....

An intersting guy named Alan Parekh has a projects website with a store and
lots of high-brightness LED stuff.

Then there's

All Electronics at
http://www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/category/340/LEDs/1.html and

ALLTRonics at http://www.alltronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=31 whee
I often will buy the little black plastic panel clips for ELDs that I tend to
prefer over the chrome ones..... and

Electronics Goldmine at
http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/departments.asp?dept=1088 where I tend
to buy bulk, and

Marlin P. Jones at http://www.mpja.com/departments.asp?dept=122 plus great
prices on high capacity power supplies!!,

and on the general materials and unusual items front, I've used
Online metals at http://www.onlinemetals.com/ and the two I love most in all
the hardware world,

American Model Engineering Supply at http://www.americanmodeleng.com/ and
Small Parts at http://www.smallparts.com/

I'm sure there are a lot of other resources, but these are those that I have
come back to again and again over the years. They do a good job at what they do.

Best Regards and Happy Model RR-ing!
