I doubt Bill Wade sold more than a few dozen of these, so there are likely not
a lot of them floating around out there. I do hope to start mine
as soon as I get a few other projects out of the way (yes, Ed) and would
appreciate comparing notes with any other list members who are
farther along with theirs.
I've read the instructions twice already (and will probably do so again once or
twice more before starting) and think I'm fairly up to speed on
how it will go together. A few questions already occur to me: is there any
good reason not to use regular wheelsets with insulation on one side
for the tender trucks instead of installing a pickup on one of the
double-insulated ones provided? Since I haven't actually started putting any of
it together, I haven't checked out the clearances for the Sagami can motor, so
I don't know yet whether one shaft will need to be trimmed, or
whether it can be used with a flywheel. And a related question is whether
there is supposed to be a backhead; some of the indications on the
website suggest that, but there is nothing about it in the instruction sheet
nor does there appear to be one in any of the parts packages.
Perhaps most central is whether to solder any of the pewter castings; I
generally prefer solder to ACC and have generally had fair success in
doing British white-metal castings with Carr flux and solder. Are the pewter
castings more robust for soldering than the usual white-metal alloy
which seems to have a melting point not much higher than most solder?
I have begun to understand why Bill initially offered a higher-priced option
with the chassis pre-assembled (and perhaps why that no longer exists).
