Mike, I think everybody is in the same boat with you regarding
magazines. I personally don't subscribe to hardly any at this time. I
do purchase occasional issues locally. It was a matter of cost & all
the storage space. I probably don't save a whole lot of money buying
one at a time, but I don't have to deal with the old issues either. I'm
sort of going more to the individual historical societies' magazines.
They're expensive but generally quarterly publications.

I'm glad your impressed with the RMC inside cover. I have personally
have felt the opposite. With the lack of some of the major producers
lately, it really has shown how weak we look. Since I'm involved in the
ad business, I also look at the visual impact and am not impressed. I
do hope it's successful however--lots of really bad ads (local car
dealers come to mind almost universally) make money. I have not seen
this new pull-out nor do I know who has run ads in it or what the
editorial content might be.

This pull-out section might be the replacement for a long-ago, but
similar effort that Don Thompson, Don Dewitt, myself and perhaps some
others put together for some kind of anniversary--50th?? that ran in
Model Railroader. I remember very well photographing the newest brass
from Overland in the form of E units, and some of the USRA engines,
maybe the Daylite GS-4, Omnicon's 2-8-0 and our first really good
plastic engine--the FP-7. Don Thompson called me asking for photos. So
I actually had to paint several engines before anything else.

And speaking of magazines, many of you know that I photographed Bob
Jackson's layout just after the convention in St. Louis for RMC. I
prepared the entire article and submitted it a long time ago. I
received no communication from RMC, so after about 18 months, I pulled
the article. Model Railroader has agreed to publish the article--so it
will happen.
