Most of my AM freight cars have "USA" cast into the dies, which suggests that 
they were originally produced here, but
quite a few scale models which used to be made entirely in the US ended up in 
East Asia where low labor costs resulted
in larger sales by offering ready-to-run cars for those that didn't want to 
assemble their own kits (Intermountain in O 
scale being an obvious case before they sold their dies to Atlas).
The AM boxes still suggest that scale cars are available as kits, although I 
suspect it is no longer possible to buy them
that way new.
