Peter mentioned John Porter who did a couple of atricles scratchbuilding a
Pennsylvania hopper car and flat car in old issues of MR. His articles are
excellent. John was a good builder. I have wanted to build the flat car that
Peter mentioned. Haven't gotten to it. John Porter also wrote an article in the
"S"cale Railroading" magazine in the Oct/Nov 1992 and Jun/Jul 1993 issues. This
was when the magazine was put out by Ed L. The article was how to build a 1909
Pennsylvania Railroad Class KF Stock Car. It is a very good article. Another
project I have not gotten to. John also offered decals for the stock car. I
have a few sets of the decals.
John lived in Clinton MA. After I ordered decals, he called me a couple of
times to talk about scratchbuilding and about the stock car project. I think he
just wanted to talk to someone. Those were long distance calls to someone who
he didn't know. At that time, John told me he had a heart condition. The last
time I talked to him was in 1995. He passed away about a year later. I never
met him, but he was very friendly and helpful.
Good luck to Peter on his hopper project.

  Subject: {S-Scale List} Scratchbuilding a Hopper

As I mentioned in my previous post this morning, I am wrapping up the
construction of a structure. My next project will be a scratchbuilt PRR
H21a hopper (I have the B.T.S. one, not happy with it; besides I need a
  bunch of them).

About 8 years ago I went on an intense search for older magazines to
complement my already growing collection of model railroading magazines.
I bought some from local modelers who were thinning out their collection
and a lot via eBay. As time permits, I actually go back and read through
those older magazines (and subsequently document them in my web site's
  "Library" section).

This week I spent the last 10 or 20 minutes of each evening reading
through the November 1978 issue of Model Railroader. Much to my (very!)
pleasant surprise I came across an article by John R. Porter titled
"Scratchbuild a Wartime Hopper Car"! As if that wasn't enough, the model
he is building is S-scale! Fantastic! Exactly what I am looking for.
Needless to say, the evening that I read that article, it took me a lot
longer to actually drift off to sleep!

Apparently he also wrote an article on how to build a Pennsy flatcar in
the October 1977 issue. I have that issue, but I have not yet read it.
This was another project I was planning on doing later this year.

Anyway, I thought I'd share that with those of you who might be
interested in such an article. I have done some scratchbuilding, but
this article will be a great hand-holder while I build my first S-scale
  scratchbuilt freight car.

I don't know if John is on this list, if he still models in S, or if he
is even still around, but I am sure grateful for his time and effort.

  - Peter.
