While many have been filling my inbox with agony over SAL boxcars and different
manufacturing techniques I have actually accomplished a few things.
I finished lettering my converted AF boxcar (not only did I add the ACE cast
floor with white-metal brake gear, the white-metal brakewheel, and AF
corner steps, but since it had led a hard life before I got it, I had to splice
scrap roofwalk--from the AF caboose I am converting--and replace some
corners with styrene sheet) CNJ, using the CDS set. It is a reasonable
facsimile of the ARA ("X29") smaller boxcar and looks quite different from the
higher AM and SHS housecars.
After painting and lettering a Max Gray PRR GLca hopper I bought a few weeks
ago I used the appropriate O scale CDS dry transfer set and found it really IS
generally easier to apply them in the larger scale than the ones I've been
doing recently in S; some of the cars I've gotten from the Seeburger estate
were lettered with CDS sets and I wish I could get the end reporting marks done
as neatly as he did.
Then this morning I got around to using the extra SRR gondola decal set I
bought from Jim King for my Rex gondola (with Kadees and AM trucks); it is
just right for that prototype. Although someone else has pointed out that the
Rex ends are not quite right for the SRR low-side, otherwise it is the
closest of all other low-sides as to prototype. The only problem with that is
that I have two of the SMMW kits, and I doubt I can justify three of that
particular prototype, as I model northeastern ambience.
