Well Brooks, if your the tail, I'll be the tip of the tail! Before I
head home for the Easter holiday, I'll make a couple of observations.
I've only had one major feature in RMC plus a couple of smaller single
shots, so I'm not certain what response they'll get or need to continue
to work with us. Bill has indicated to me that they are constantly
'under the gun' to get things done. Apparently their staff is a
fraction of Kalmbach's, so it's likely the diorama and perhaps editorial
over site on the copy might have been lacking when compared to a typical
Kalmbach 'project' layout. If you dig through some of the SHS catalogs
you will see the efforts I went through to make things interesting and
different each year. In some cases I built simple setups, some fairly
elaborate and some used my own layout when it seemed to work. I always
tried to stay with a basic theme but vary the way it was stated. All of
these sets that I built took several days to put together. I just don't
think RMC had that kind of time to devote to this project and I suspect
their budget wasn't adequate either.
In our small scale, with small budgets, it's likely whoever is in charge
of putting together a future effort will also be the one to build the
layout/set, photograph it, and write all the copy, but only after there
is a clear stated purpose. Another way to handle such a project would
be to have a group of us supply the entire finished project to RMC.
Dick Karnes or Bob Jackson could write copy. One of our manufacturers
could round up product, somebody who builds layouts fast could do that,
it could be photographed and displayed at several NMRA, NASG, WGH, RPM,
shows. All it takes is fore site, an effort and some $$!
