Despite working on some O scale again (building three Wisconsin Central/DMK
single-sheathed boxcar kits simultaneously), a friend (also
in O scale traction) sent me one of Jan Lorenzen's EMD switcher kits that he'd
had around forever. Having built some of the Locomotive
Workshop "kits" (known to O scale modelers as "the next closest thing to
scratchbuilding") before and returned a few to the sellers after
getting a good look at them, I was pleasantly surprised at how good the
etchings and forming was. I may build it just for the challenge,
although since I own three SHS SW-8/9's I hardly need it.
I think it is Bob Nicholson who has one or more in operation; I'm curious how
many more are out there. During the long dry spell, they
were about the only thing available for diesel switchers other than the Miller
Alco, and I suspect S scalers back then were glad to get
them. The kit also confirmed my suspicion that the white-metal sideframes that
came with my second Miller with Cascade drive were
LWS, the previous one having the nice lost-wax sprung ones.
Now if I could only locate one of the LWS white-metal 44-tonners...
