My understanding of the NMRA commemorative cars was that they solicited bids
from manufacturers in each scale
for each road name, and the actual kind of car produced was not necessarily
logical in terms of the mythical
road. PRS never produced any open hoppers, so although they ended up with
quite a few of the NMRA orders,
most tended to be 40' boxcars and a few refrigerator cars and the John
Armstrong ACF covered hopper.
AM did several, including the Marquette Union twin hopper and the Freytag
Davies Steel gondola, and SHS did
at least one, the Glencoe and Skokie single-sheathed boxcar (absolutely hideous
paint scheme--no reflection
on Don Thompson, as I imagine he didn't get to choose it).
I suppose I could speak more authoritatively if I had ready reference to the
complete list of the cars, in this
case the S scale offereings, and I assume such a list exists, but I am not
sufficiently motivated to find it.
And, as an afterthought, often the same famous modeler road name was applied to
different types of cars in the
several scales, and especially in S scale where the number of options was more
limited the resulting choice may
not have been optimal.
