Spent some of the weekend making removable coal loads for hopper cars. After a
couple of false starts, I got it down to a science. In the process, I found
that the inside length of AM 2-bay open hoppers are about 1/8" shorter than the
AF conversions SHABBONA uses.

Not a problem, but using loads made for AM cars leaves a gap at the end of the
AF conversions, but the loads are so easy to make I can make whatever I need
for both.

I also found that the blue masking tape I use to build up 1/8" sides on the 1"
foam I use under the "coal" does not stick to the thinned Elmer's Glue I use as
a bonding agent, as I thought it would, so once the loads are painted, I can
pull it off and touch up the loads, rather than leave it in place as I thought
I would have to.

I also went one step further and made up a removable load of sand from
authentic SE Iowa "Dhurght" (found only in SE Iowa) for the SHABBONA
AF-converted gondolas, using the same procedure sans the paint. This "sand"
will be destined for the ready mix and concrete block factory I want to locate
at Mooar Yard. I want to do a couple more of these sand loads.

I'm heading for Crystal Lake, IL, tomorrow, maybe for a couple of days. I hope
to darken the doorway of Des Plaines Hobbies while I'm there, most likely on
Wednesday. Will you be open, Ron?

The "loads" are easy to insert and remove, and thus solve a loaded and empty
open car conundrum that would plague the RR otherwise.
