It is not easy to visit Iwo Jima, as the island is administered by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, primarily because there are so many unrecovered remains of Japanese troops from the battle; several times each year Japanese veterans groups are allowed to visit, but rarely the general public. I visited Iwo Jima several times while stationed at Yokota AB near Tokyo, as the USAF chaplains provided support to the USCG Loran station personnel assigned there. My elder son was also able to visit with his scout troop from the base (arrangements were made by the C-130 AC for the weekly resupply run, whose son was also in the troop).
