Go to Kiribati and see whats left of Betio Island (Tarawa) then watch the
videos. Graves found under houses, one under a pig pen.
I did those 4 days (way back)
As a Chaplain you would readily know the effects - Then and now

It is not easy to visit Iwo Jima, as the island is administered by the
Japanese Self-Defense Forces, primarily because there are so many unrecovered
remains of Japanese troops from the battle; several times each year Japanese
veterans groups are allowed to visit, but rarely the general public.
I visited Iwo Jima several times while stationed at Yokota AB near Tokyo, as
the USAF chaplains provided support to the USCG Loran station personnel
assigned there. My elder son was also able to visit with his scout troop from
the base (arrangements were made by the C-130 AC for the weekly
resupply run, whose son was also in the troop).

naming names - how could I have forgotten Frank Titman, a Navy Seabee who
served on Iwo Jima building runways, roads and housing? When Ken Zieska and I
visited him a few years ago, we shared stories with Frank about Iwo since Ken
and I had just returned from a tour of the Sulpher Island. Frank showed us an
album with some of the artwork and cartoons he had created for the newspaper
distributed to the troops billeted on Iwo after the war had moved on to
Okinawa. As everyone knows, Frank went on to submit the winning design for the
NASG logo - the clasping couplers.
