Dear John,
OK, stuff I wanted to do for years (who wants to worry about
finding a builder anyway...just teasing...). I believe the Omnicon
Budd RDC is a model of the first few years of production where the
number board is on the car side letterboard (vs. the ends) and the
headlight was lower on the end. The CNJ purchased 7 RDC-1s starting
in 1953. The first 4 had the The last three (555/556/557) were
delivered in 1956/57 and have the numberboards on the end numberboards
on the side letterboards. Some of these either did not have pilots or
they were removed. Those that do are either modified or are not they
same type. In 1956, the CNJ purchased 4 RDC-1s from the NYS&W
(558/559/560/561). These were built in 1950 and have the numberboards
on the side letterboards. The pilot on the NYS&W seems to be the same.
There seems to be at least 3 if not 4 different CNJ schemes over
the years. I am interested in the 50's as delivered scheme (or in the
way of the NYS&W, as decorated in 1956). I thought these were
lettered in black, but Vic Roseman assures me that what seems to be
black is really very dark green (maybe Pullman green?). I asked on
the CNJ e-group and was told that Gerry Burnett's CNJ book also
indicated that the RDC's were originally lettered in Green. I
measured several pictures and I think the Liberty heralds is 34". I
am hoping to work on the letterboard lettering and numbers next week.
