Hi Bob;

The original USRA single sheathed cars all had the upper door track extended to
the left of the door. I have not found any information as to why this was done,
but generally any car built to this design under USRA control has this feature.

SHS first run or so of these cars as well as the first run of stock cars had
this feature.

Later runs changed the design to end the upper track at the left edge of the
door. I think Don has said this was to match later cars built to the similar
ARA design in the 1920s. Once the change was made, all later runs came with the
short track, including road names that were USRA cars and should have the
longer track. Some of the photos of my display cars show an unfinished MILW
car. I swaped the roof on that model with one from a PRR stock car to get the
correct longer track.

Hope that helps!

Pieter, I'm not certain if you know, but I just had to ask somebody
who knows more about freight car details. Looking at your X26; notice
that the upper door track runs to both sides of the door itself. I
have some of my undecorated single sheathed that way, but I believe
the finished models have them shortened to run only on one side--the
right. Why?

Great looking model btw!

One is a detailed SHS USRA boxcar as a PRR X26. Details include a new
lower door track, vertical hand brake and Carmer cut levers.
Information came from the RMC series "Essential Freight Cars" and
other sources.
The second is an SHS NYC USRA hopper with new steps, coupler cut
levers and a bracket for the air tank. Information from Mainline
Modeler and Railmodel Journal articles.
