Dear John,
    The real question is IF the CNJ RDC roofs were ever painted  
black.  The consensus among CNJ fans is that black you see is soot.   
The CNJ was almost bankrupt when the photos of the black roofs  
appear.  They questions posed is why would a broke railroad spend any  
money on painting stainless steel roofs?  But, I am sure you could  
weather the roof to make it look like the CNJ's RDCs and cover the  
crazed finish.
    I dug my RDC out of the basement today and hope to bring to work  
on Monday.
