Subject: {S-Scale List} EM1 & Tsunami
All,
My EM1 was the first loco I have that got converted to DCC. I has a bit
intimidated at the time with DCC and taking apart my EM1 so someone else did
it for me. In spite of being emphatic that I wanted everything including the
speaker in the boiler it came back to me with the speaker in the tender.
Also the chuff rate was going to some other imaginary loco's speed but not
my matched to my EM1. I loved running it but hated the sound.
About 8 months ago I decided to tear into it and install a heavy Tsunami and
deep bass speaker. I also want to use the sound cams. About a day and a half
later I was done. I tried to run it on my little loop I had at the time. It
came up with some sporadic shorts on a day I did not have the time or
especially the patience to diagnose the problem.
Since I was concerned with this S bend I am putting is as a part of my
freight bypass I wanted to test the curvature shape on my 2 "big engines"
the PRR J1 and EM1. I took the piece of track and clipped it up to my
PowerCab. I did not sense any issues with the J1. I now had to dive into the
shorts of the EM1. For some strange reason the shorts did not fix themselves
just sitting in the box for 8 months. But I was hopeful.
As it turned out those pesky "detail" wires got into places they should not
have causing an electrical fracas. After about 45 minutes of poking around I
am now calling it fixed - luckily without having to take it apart again.
Here is a pretty chunky photo of my wiper set up.
http://www.lanestrains.com/EM1_Wipers.jpg Note you can adjust the engagement
of the wipers with it upside down and running. They are ½ round brass bars
soldered to some .032 phosphor bronze wire. All the pressure you need is to
just touch the high spots of the cams. Too much pressure is tons worse than
not enough.
Now that I have run it a bit with both cams functioning I am not sure I like
the sound. At anything past a crack of the throttle the chuff beats quickly
blend into a solid sound. An easy fix is to just disconnect the jumper wire
to the front cam but that will return the sound to 4 beats per revolution. I
will leave it as is for now. The EM1 goes around the S bend almost without
any overhang so I know the turns are gradual.
One this is for sure though. The Tsunami and deep bass speaker are head and
shoulders above the old DSD and whatever speaker was in it.
Next up (at some point) is the same conversion for the J1.
Thank You,
Bill Lane
