Dear Bill:
I know this might sound heretical but have you considered having only one
or two chuffs per revolution? After listening to an HO 4-8-4 being run with a
passenger train (4 chuffs per revolution) and an American Flyer 4-8-4 with a
passenger train (1 chuff per revolution), The HO model was an almost continuous
noise. The real UP 4-8-4 844 has distinct chuffs at almost any speed. I must
state I like hearing the distinct chuff. I don't feel the current crop of
sound units do a good job at passenger speeds. They have it perfected for slow
speeds such as D&RGW narrow gauge climbing the mountains.
Are front and rear engines (mechanisms) independent? Do the side rods go
in and out of sync like the real ones? If they don't then one cam would be
enough for the whole thing. If they are independent I would definitely have
one cam on each engine. I have sound recordings of a UP Big Boy and 3985. The
front and rear engines do not stay in sync. That is the greatest part of sound
and double-heading steam.
Consider faking it with fewer chuffs per revolution.
Thorin
P.S. My father had a UP O Scale Challenger. It had only one motor powering
both engines. I like seeing the rods look 'out of sync'. I discovered that I
needed to have the front engine with rods up and the rear engine with rods
down. Remember that when photographing a passenger engine the rods should be
up and the reverse for freight.
