No reason to speculate. If you have a unit with the speaker facing up, hold 
your hand over it and see if it sounds any better to you. If not, no need to 
change. I have to say I have not experimented, the consensus on the DCC sound 
lists favored down, so that's how I installed mine. At least one modeler I know 
of started strongly in favor of "up" until he tried the hand test. After the 
test, he started switching to "down".

I suspect (and I'm not a sound specialist or physicist) that when aimed up, 
most of the sound heads off to the the ceiling, with only the fringes of the 
sound wave reaching a listener alongside the unit. When aimed down, the sound 
bounces off the (usually hard) track and roadbed and a larger percentage 
reaches the listener. That, and as Peter notes, the layout itself may act as a 
sounding board to accentuate the base. These are definitely SWAGs (Scientific, 
Wild A...d Guesses).
