Jim,
Actually, Jettie’s Niagara with it’s higher draw Pittman motor is not a
problem. After ready on one of the lists about it blowing out Tsunami’s, I
installed a higher rated Lenz motor decoder in the loco, along with a Tsunami
in the tender and worked fine. By including a ‘stay alive’ circuit in the
loco, I only needed two wires to the tender; one for right track power, and one
for chuff pickup. Reliability of left wheel pickup through the drawbar was
supported by the ‘stay alive’ circuit. Takes a little more planning to
program, but is simplified by using different short addresses for each decoder.
Ran well on Gaylord’s layout! I have found, as you stated, any of the River
Raisin and AM with lower draw can motors, work well with the regular Tsunami!
Haven’t checked the current draw on an Omnicon Mohawk yet.

Bill - While I think the sound decoders are great, although sometimes
overrated; I am less sold on the need for larger amperage decoders. For S
scale, I think it is just a way of paying more money for something you don't
really need. So far all the DCC and sound decoder installations I've done have
been with the standard decoders and I have had no issues; including installs on
Allegheny's, 2-6-6-2's, double headed 2-10-4's and turbines pulling long
trains. The only exception was Jettie's Niagara which has some crazy 6 amp
sewing machine motor - and still, I might add, is routinely out pulled by my
NYC and SP Mike's...!
Personally, I wish the manufacturers would focus less on added electronic gizmo
sounds & features and more on easier installation. I'll bet a lot of other guys
are like me, they will try the "new improved" decoders on locomotives not yet
equipped with any DCC, but as far as going back and replacing existing sound or
decoder installations... no way!!
