   Michael,  I believe Stan is right. A friend of mine at one time used Rit 
clothes dye and apparently it contains salt in the formula....result 99% of the 
spikes turned green and rusted. I guess its best to only use the product 
designed for the job. I always liked Tru-Scale tie stain, not sure if the 
formula has changed or not.
