Thanks Gale.

It is REALLY tempting to attempt making the modifications necessary to
convert the project S-12 into a Frisco DS-4-4-1000... but I'm trying to
resist. Also being considered is turning it into a Missouri Pacific S-12 in
the Jenks Blue scheme. Again, tempting. (Both roads fit my Kansas City
area switching theme.)

Frankly, my best bet would be to go with my own concept: The Kansas City &
Gulf.

I think proto-lancing is probably the least painful way for me to enjoy S
scale. That way, what one likes and what is available can be fitted into the
proto-lanced paper roster and thus become possible modeling subjects.

Fortunately, my KC&G theme was well developed (and modeled) during my HO
years. Unfortunately, the engine and rolling stock rosters were based on
what I liked and what was available (or possible) in HO scale. Modeling the
KC&G in S scale makes it a different animal. I just finished dredging up my
old HO KC&G rosters to look things over to see what could be modified to
accomodate S scale. Seems I would need to tweak the diesel evolution to
also accomodate S-12's, FA2's, and a few other minor changes. Fortunately,
the "meat" of the KC&G roster is available in S scale, the engines that are
not would simply go unmodeled.

I envisioned the SHS NW2 I have becoming the first KC&G engine to be modeled
in S scale... and it may. Still, though, a Baldwin would be awfully nice.
For a reference point, here is a pic of the HO version of a KC&G NW2. I
would model this same unit... so I would have it in two different scales!
