and he notes -

"Put out to pasture" is a term usually used in
connection with retirement , i. e.: "Old Dobbin
was put out to pasture" or "I ain't seen Jeff
since they put him out t' pasture." I remember
the term being used back in the steam loco days
when a certain engine was retired!

BTW - Sheep go to a meadow, Buffalo to a range
and cattle to a quarter. The term 'pasture' is
correct, of course, but colloquially not used
very often. And since mines do not graze they
would be only found in a field, which leads to a
question: if a farmer's field can be left "to lie
fallow" would a mine-less field be the same?

And finally (I hope), I have heard the term:
"Driving cows to pasture." I wonder if one is allowed to blow their horns?

Raleigh in 'mindless' Maine...
