The privacy of individuals has been part of my business for many years
as we used actual people for testimonial ads. We've photographed people
along with their collections of "whatever" and they were concerned about
being targeted for theft. So instead of us informing 20,000 members of
the NMRA or 5,000 in the NASG, we sent out 2 million copies to anybody
in the area. It's one thing for any of us to travel to Jersey and steal
Bill Lane's Shay, but if he's featured in USA Weekend edition issue, his
odds of becoming a victim have now increased. You can find all kinds of
data on line on most people.

When we had the national NMRA here in 87 (?), I asked if anybody had
been the victim of theft. Of course I was told we can trust fellow
modelers, but one gentlemen said someone had stolen a Shay from his
layout. One of the first times I was on the tour, I had some guy with a
video camera get into every nook and cranny so that it made me
uncomfortable.

Now add in all these electronic devices for computer spying, one has to
be alert for all kinds of things that were supposed to make life easier!
