Way, way back in Model Railroader there was an article on how to pressurize 
your basement so all the offending columns could be removed.  I don't remember 
what year it appeared but I do recall that it was an April issue.

It might be worth your while to get a professional opinion on moving the pole.  
If it's along the right axis, a mere foot might well be within acceptable 
limits.  That's what I did in my basement.  Just make sure you have a new 
support pole in place  before removing the old one.

I just got my best look at the placement of the layout in my basement this

morning. I am governed by a support pole that would have been so much better

for me if it was even just a foot in the other direction.
