Being in the photo business, we've sometimes used to coat prints to 
prevent fading and water damage not to mention client handling.  A 
common brand name was McDonalds, which I discovered worked real well on 
decals, especially those semi ancient Enhorning's.

I tried it on a plastic model with disastrous results--so another no-no!
