Good maintenance could be a legit reason. DSG does indicate that all RS-3s got
244 engines, it looks like the 251 came with newer units that had long hoods as
tall as the cabs. DJE

  Dave,

I think that's right, and possibly some 251 engines were put into some of the
RS-3 units. It is interesting, however, that the CGW had 6 or so RS-2 units
which the crews seemed to have liked, if reports are accurate. Of course, the
CGW until its merger with the C&NW carefully maintained its diesels.

The original Diesel Spotters Guide says the 251 was not used until the FPA-4s
came in 1958, though it may have gone into RS-type units before then. DJE

Didn't the 251 engine come in there somewhere? I thought perhaps incorrectly
that the FA-2 units had the 251 engine and that it corrected the deficiency of
the 244 crankshaft problem.

  FA-1s were built 1945-1950, FA-2s were built 1950-1953. All had the 244
engine which was said to be bad for crankshafts.

John, do you have a copy of the issue where Ladd Houda rebuilt the Rock
Island unit.

What year were these locos first released?
