I must agree with Roy here. In the Dakotas farmers took great pride in
their barns and most were built very similarly. The typical hip roof
versions with a hay loft was an amazing design. Often the hipped
version would have lean-to's on one or both sides. Found along most
fence lines are little metal signs advertising "Chief Brand Paints" for
the usual red paint. I'll take a stab at the siding and say my area
used either 1 x 6 or 1 x 8's with a groove for decoration. It was also
T & G for keeping the winds out and for additional sway protection.

In traveling to the Wisconsin convention a few years back I was amazed
when I came across an area where the old barns were circular in nature
and often with stone or brick walls--new to me.
